According to the statement from Meta Platforms, the umbrella organization of Facebook, trials for applications enabling monetization on augmented reality platforms, often referred to as the ‘metaverse,’ have commenced.
The capability to sell digital assets and experiences within the ‘Horizon Worlds’ platform used to create metaverses is crucial in attracting users to these platforms.
The statement mentioned that these applications will initially be available for testing purposes to a group of users who create games and design accessories on the platform, accessible through the company’s virtual glasses.
Meta is also experimenting with a “maker bonus” program in the US, where a small group of Horizon Worlds users will be paid every month to use new features the company is launching.
“We believe there should be lots of great worlds out there, and for that to happen, there need to be a lot of creators who can support themselves and make this their everyday work,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg during a discussion with early users.

The parent company of Facebook, which rebranded to Meta last year, has heavily invested in virtual and augmented reality for the metaverse, a futuristic concept of a network of virtual environments accessed through various devices where users can work and socialize.
The company aims to create a virtual reality where lands, buildings, avatars, and even names can be traded as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) or blockchain-based virtual assets. The market for these assets has experienced significant growth over the past year, with sales sometimes reaching thousands of dollars.
